Justice J. S. Verma, former Chief Justice of India & former Chairperson of the NHRC, was the first Chairperson of the News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) [Formerly known as News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA)], an independent self regulatory mechanism set up by the News Broadcasters & Digital Association (NBDA) [Formerly known as News Broadcasters Association (NBA)]. He passed away on 22.4.2013 after a brief illness. During the four years of his association with the NBDSA, he brought status to self regulation as he truly believed in the freedom of the media and its responsibility. He wanted news broadcasters to be meticulous in observing standards of diligence, accuracy, privacy, giving individuals being reported upon, a fair chance to respond, and the accused a fair trial. Justice Verma recognized the need for standards and under his guidance NBDSA formulated several guidelines which the members of NBDA observe. He understood the finer points of law, which helped in understanding the intricacies of the situation & its repercussions .As a tribute to Justice J.S.Verma, NBDA decided to have a yearly memorial lecture.
